Cloud Migration: Key Considerations for Indian Businesses

Moving applications to the cloud can improve reliability and reduce infrastructure overhead — if you plan the migration carefully.

Cloud computing has transformed how businesses deploy and scale software. For organisations in India running on-premises servers or ageing hosting setups, migration to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud can improve uptime, security, and operational flexibility.

Before migrating, assess your current infrastructure honestly. Which applications are business-critical? Which have dependencies on legacy databases or licensed software? A thorough inventory prevents surprises during the transition and helps prioritise workloads for phased migration.

Choose a migration strategy that matches each application's profile. Some systems can be lifted and shifted with minimal changes. Others benefit from re-architecting to use cloud-native services like managed databases, serverless functions, and auto-scaling compute.

Data residency and compliance are important considerations for Indian businesses. Understand where your data will be stored, how backups are handled, and whether your cloud provider meets industry-specific requirements relevant to your sector.

Cost management requires ongoing attention. Cloud resources scale easily, but unused instances, oversized servers, and unmonitored storage can inflate monthly bills. Implement cost monitoring and right-sizing practices from day one.

Plan for downtime and rollback. Even well-prepared migrations can encounter issues. Maintenance windows, communication plans, and tested rollback procedures protect your business during the cutover.

Security should be designed into the cloud architecture — identity management, network segmentation, encryption at rest and in transit, and regular vulnerability assessments.
